Some new features in Ubuntu 11.10 - released 2011-10-13
Ubuntu and Linux advances quickly and Ubuntu 11.10 (codename Oneiric Ocelot) has been improved in many ways. A lot of the included software have been updated, improved and enhanced, and several new features have been included together with improved security in general. Ubuntu 11.10 will be supported for 18 months and when the next edition is released, you can upgrade to it for free.
- Follows is a short, but not complete, summary of new features added since edition 11.04.
Unity - Ubuntu 11.10 includes a new release of Unity and Compiz with for instance a new Alt+Tab switcher. Places are renamed to Lenses and gives possibilities to advanced filtering options like ratings, range, and categories. The Dash has a new music lens, linked to Banshee, that searches your personal and online music collections.
Linux kernel 3.0 - Ubuntu 11.10 includes the Linux kernel 3.0.0-12.20 as underlying infrastructure.
Thunderbird -Thundrbird is included as the default email client. This now includes menu and launcher integration via Unity.
Déjà Dup - Déjà Dup (day-ja-doop) is included as the default backup tool. Securely store copies of your important data on a separate hard drive, cloud server, or even Ubuntu One.
Gwibber - Gwibber for microblogging offers improved performance and a new interface using the most recent GNOME technologies.
GNOME - GNOME 3.2 is a major upgrade from GNOME 2.32 included in Ubuntu 11.04 and includes amongst other things Gnome shell.
LightDM - Ubuntu now uses the LightDM login manager with the Unity greeter.
Ubuntu Software Center - Ubuntu 11.10 includes Ubuntu Software Center 5.0, featuring a completely new interface that provides a simpler and more enjoyable experience for browsing, searching and managing your software.
OneConf - OneConf is a mechanism for recording software information in Ubuntu One, and synchronizing with other computers as needed.
Ubuntu Font Family - Ubuntu Font Family has been expanded with 2 more fonts - Ubuntu Mono and Ubuntu Condensed.

Ubuntu 11.10 Server Edition - Ubuntu 11.10 Server Edition includes some new software like Juju, Orchestra and Cobbler. Ubuntu 11.10 Server Edition do also support the ARM architecture. Several applications have been updated.
